Sneaky Peek for the MoonWalk London LIVE

The Walk the Walk Event Team shares the latest MoonWalk London News!

Sneaky Peek… Updated 13/05/22

Where does the route go?

The Walk the Walk Team are beyond excited to be finally back and doing what we do best!

MoonWalk City is being prepared and checks on our route are taking place as we write. Pink lights are already lighting parts of the capital and we can’t wait to see you!

We thought you might like a little overview of some of the wonderful sights and landmarks that you will be passing… Look out for the beautiful Peace Pagoda in Battersea Park, the Famous Battersea Power Station chimneys that will be glowing pink, Big Ben, the Houses of Parliament, the London Eye, The Tate Modern, Tower Bridge, Harrods the glorious V&A Museum plus many more favourites so all very exciting!

We plan the route to be as entertaining as possible (it takes a year’s worth of work) but last-minute changes can happen. If we do have any unavoidable changes we will announce them on the night!

Keeping on track... GPS

Just in case you didn't know and to remind those that do... all you Full Mooners have signed up for 26.2 miles and Half Mooners, 13.1 plus 2 glorious miles. These distances have been measured accurately using the latest mechanical odometer. So… a note to all you GPS and app users... ahead of the challenge, we just want to say that inaccuracies over these distances are really common, especially in built-up places like central London. Trust us, we have seen it all… lots of 'zig-zagging' paths that don't exist, and some even showing people walking through the Thames!... I promise you the route does not ask you to walk on water, so unless we have to make any last-minute route changes, this distance is accurate... you heard it here first!

Shine a light like the hero you are...

It’s easy… Just download 'Screen Light Color' from your app store and choose hot pink.

There will be a moment on the night when we can all shine a light together... Just think how amazing it will be... Thousands of MoonWalkers united together in one common shining goal!

All Weather Poncho... an important piece of kit

All Weather Poncho... It might look like a bit of plastic (biodegradable) but this is a truly amazing bit of kit and is good for any weather.

If you begin to feel cool, wearing an all-weather poncho can really warm you up. Wear it over the top of your fabulously decorated bra and if you still feel cold after walking for a few minutes, belt your bumbag over the top to keep the plastic close to your skin and put the hood up underneath your cap… a lot of body heat is lost through the top of your head!

Don’t forget yours… If you have already used it whilst training, or you forget it… we will have limited stock to buy for a minimum £2.00 donation.

Even if the weekend is warm… and it is looking good, bring a long sleeved sweatshirt to tie around your waist so you have something to put on if you need it, as well as some warm clothes to put on at the end. Tiredness can make you feel a bit chilly, even when it isn't cold!

DO NOT FORGET YOUR SUNSCREEN, the sun can be extremely intense in the early hours and the last thing you want is a red face and a burnt nose on your Finish Line photo! You can find a list of everything you need here.

We say NO to Walking Poles!

We just wanted to mention that Walk the Walk do not allow Walking Poles on this challenge. They can be extremely dangerous and cause injury, albeit unintentional, when used on busy streets where other walkers can be close to you.

If you do bring poles, our Volunteer Marshalls will request that you hand them to the Volunteers, who will then return them to MoonWalk City where you can pick them up on your return.

Walking sticks are permitted, and if you do need to use any walking aid please do get in touch with our Walker Support so they can ensure that everyone is made aware of your need.

Sneaky Peek... Updated 18/3/22

Gaby Roslin your wonderful host for the night!

First of all, we just had to share our excitement that one of Walk the Walk's greatest supporters, the wonderful Gaby Roslin will be hosting the MoonWalk! Gaby will be joined by guests all giving you massive support for the challenge you are undertaking... and who knows you may even find yourself up there on the stage!

We’ll be sharing more exciting news from the stage over the coming weeks, it really is going to be an amazing night!

MoonWalk City's in the pink…

As for many, this will be the first time in quite a while of gathering together in a large crowd, so, with our aim to make everyone feel as safe and comfortable as we can, and knowing just what a squeeze our iconic pink tent can get… We have decided to give it a rest for this year, and we’re going al fresco! Make no mistake, under the stars the stage will still be ablaze with that well-known MoonWalk spirit and fun! There will be flags adorning and lights drenching and our Moon Balloon flying above MoonWalk City. Plus, we have a few surprises up our sleeves which we'll reveal in due course! It's going to be as incredible as ever... after 2 years of no MoonWalks, we just can't wait to be back celebrating and having fun with you all... bring it on!

How and When you can enter MoonWalk City...

We are still working on the detail but we know many are waiting to make travel plans, so we can say that Gates will open from around 8.30pm. You will be given a specific arrival time, and just to give you the heads up, as you go through the entrance you will be given a Wristband which you will need to put on before you pass through the gates. Consequently, we would really appreciate it if you can stick to your time so that we can process everyone coming through the gate as efficiently and speedily as possible.

Amongst other things, you will be receiving your Walker Number in your pack, which will be sent out soon. This number is unique to you so must not be passed on. You will also be receiving full information for the night, a little closer to the date.

It is worth just mentioning now so that you can plan ahead, that only small bags will be allowed into MoonWalk City with essential items that can be stowed overnight whilst you walk. The bag must not exceed 40cm x 55cm in size but more about this closer to the night.

Food and drink...

This year we are very excited to be expanding our Food and Drinks Village where you will be able to buy a variety of delicious foods and hot drinks from the moment you arrive, all the way through the night until your return through the Finish Line. Our usual kitchen is another closed space that is taking a break, so we think this will be a great addition to the MoonWalk, and we’ll be sharing more information on what will be on sale over the coming weeks!

Water is in plentiful supply at the MoonWalk both on Clapham Common and at our Service Stations out on the route.

As always, it is a careful balance to support the need for everyone to have easy and quick access to water for all our health and safety reasons, but also to meet our environmental ambitions.

This year for the first time you can bring your own water bottle and fill it on-site before you start your challenge. However, on the route we know if water is not readily available at speed people do not drink, so bottles will be available on the route. We will have accessible bins by the water station so you can transfer the water into your own bottle, and by putting the bottle into the bin, make it readily available to be collected and recycled.

Covid restrictions...

Covid must be the most talked about subject over the past two years, affecting us all in some way. It has certainly affected Walk the Walk, not only have we not held a LIVE event for over two years severely inhibiting our fundraising but at the same time, the demand for grants and funding to support those living with cancer has enormously increased.

We know that restrictions have been lifted, but we are very sensitive to the fact that Covid has not gone away, and as a cancer charity we know we have a number of participants and Volunteers that are vulnerable. Our aim is that our actions at the MoonWalk support the health and well-being of all those attending the MoonWalk to the best of our ability.

As a result, many difficult decisions have been made to support this. You can now go to this link and view the Walk the Walk Covid policies revised on 13/3/2022 and in accordance with current NHS guidelines.

Our policies are continually being reviewed. We will always advise you of any changes leading up to the MoonWalk, but we trust that the decisions made are for the good of all, and to make everyone attending feel comfortable.

Encourage just one person...

Finally, we want to encourage all would be Walkers and Volunteers out of hibernation… there are huge feel-good benefits to getting out and socialising, walking and helping others.

So, we need you to encourage just one person to join you as a  Walker or a Volunteer... go on, we know you can do it. Help us spread the word... get your friends, family and even your neighbours to join in the fun!

That's it for now, keep your eyes peeled for more Sneaky Peeks and news in our next email, and we’ll be back in touch again soon. If you have any questions or just want to chat, drop us an email or give us a call on 01483 741430.

We would love to hear from you… Happy walking!
