Walk the Walk unites with over 60 cancer charities in Westminster #OneCancerVoice

By uniting with so many other wonderful organisations, I hope that we can force the government to tackle the cancer emergency.

Walk the Walk’s Founder and Chief Executive Nina Barough joined representatives from over 60 cancer charities in Westminster, to speak with #OneCancerVoice.

The huge group gathered as a petition was handed to the Prime Minister at 10 Downing Street, calling for an ambitious, fully funded, long term strategy on cancer.

In February 2022, the Government declared a “war on cancer”, promising to publish a ten-year cancer plan for England. More than a year later, there is still no plan, and the government has instead announced it will be publishing a five-year general “major conditions strategy”, which is a short-term, catch all plan, rather than the targeted cancer response which is needed.

The #OneCancerVoice charities want the Prime Minster to commit to ambitious plans for cancer in the new short-term strategy – but to also develop a longer term plan, focused on transforming cancer research, diagnosis and treatment.

Walk the Walk is uniting with other cancer charities because we all passionately believe that cancer patients and their loved ones deserve more.

The government needs to tackle the crisis in cancer care – including the growth in waiting times, the backlog of patients and the worsening overall experience for cancer patients.

Nina Barough, Founder and Chief Executive of Walk the Walk, said:

"Meeting together in London with cancer charities from all over the country to present the One Cancer Voice Petition to Rishi Sunak was incredibly important and very empowering. Over the last 20 years, so much progress has been made in terms of breast cancer diagnosis and treatment. Without a long-term strategy, it would be an absolute travesty if that significant progress is now allowed to slide backwards. I'm really proud that Walk the Walk is part of One Cancer Voice and I hope that by uniting with so many other wonderful organisations with the same goal, we can help force the government to tackle the cancer emergency. While the government backtracks on its promises, people are losing their lives unnecessarily”.

The petition handed in  at 10 Downing Street was signed by an incredible 76,000 people – including many of Walk the Walk’s wonderful supporters. Thank you!
