Julia's Inspiring MoonWalk Story

Since 2017 I have been a MoonWalk Volunteer as I want to say thank you to Walk the Walk for saving my life!! Where would I be now if I hadn’t signed up for that first challenge?

Here are some of my MoonWalk pictures from the walks that I took part in and where I Volunteered... plus some of the old me!

My story begin in September 2011 when a friend asked on Facebook who would like to do a Walking challenge with her. Never afraid of a challenge I immediately signed up for the MoonWalk London 2012 (WalktheWalk 15th anniversary!) by October 2011 I was getting worried. Not about Walking 13.1 miles but the thought of Walking around London semi naked in a decorated bra! Why? Because I was a size 24 or XXL on top and very self conscious of it!!

October 24th, 2011 I started my weight loss journey and by May 2012 I was over 3 stone lighter and feeling ready to take on the Half Moon!

By May 2013 when I did my 2nd Half Moon I was lighter still and managed to walk it much more quickly. By May 2014 I had signed up to do my first Full Moon which I repeated in May 2015 when I was nearly at my target weight.

2016 I did a cycling challenge but since 2017 I have been a MoonWalk Volunteer as I want to say thank you to Walk the Walk for saving my life!! Where would I be now if I hadn’t signed up for that first challenge?

I have Volunteered every year (apart from Covid) as a thank you to MoonWalk London for helping me get my life back.

I am in a small team with a friend who I Walked a Half Moon back in 2013 and we have done everything from handing out water in MoonWalk City to pressing a pedestrian crossing button constantly to get Walkers safely across a busy road to supervising a toilet stop at Horse Guards Parade (gents!) and even handing out medals at the Finish Line!

This year I Volunteered for my 5th time at station 7 at the Tate Modern service station manning the toilets (sound familiar?) we had a good system of calling Walkers over to a free toilet by shouting out the number to the Volunteer near the queue. On numerous occasions, we were referred to as bingo callers but they were very pleased with our system!

Once our stint was over by around 2.30am we were once again in a Bra Car being taken to our 2nd job of the night just after Chelsea Bridge where we were seeing Walking safety over a pedestrian crossing. Everyone being weary at this point being only a mile or so from the Finish Line we were also giving lots of encouragement to get to the end!

I repeat... Where would I be now if I hadn’t signed up for that first challenge?

Thank you Julia for all your support and for sharing your amazing story.
