We’re highlighting the incredible mums, grandmothers, step-mums, foster mums and maternal figures who have taken part in our events, whether they’re walking in memory of a mum, walking alongside their children, or walking for their own health.
Moira:

Moira & Louise – October 2023, first night away celebrating the end of radiotherapy
After being diagnosed with breast cancer in 2023, Moira took on The MoonWalk Scotland alongside her daughter Louise last year.
She told us that,
At the age of 58, I was diagnosed with breast cancer in January 2023 – I’ve been through some dark times since then, but after all my treatment, I’m now feeling well and living for today. I can’t wait to take on the Half Moon (13.1 miles) at The MoonWalk Scotland with my daughter Louise and to give something back.
Moira knew The MoonWalk was going to be an emotional night but wanted to complete it to raise vital funds, but also much needed awareness about breast cancer.
You can read Moira’s story in her own words and from her daughter Louise’s perspective below
Alec:
Alec, Claire and their sons. This was the last time Claire managed to make it to the dining table in her wheelchair for dinner. It was Matthew’s birthday (12th January).
Alec MoonWalked in London last year with his family and friends in memory of his wife Claire. He shared with us that,
When I discovered The MoonWalk was on our wedding anniversary – I knew it was a sign. She was such an incredible fighter and her cancer didn’t stop her from doing so many things, even when she was very sick. She didn’t want her illness to affect the family and especially our boys
Alec, along with his and Claire’s sons, MoonWalked with their team Wadey’s Warriors for Claire’s memory and in her honour.
Sonia:
All 3 of Sonia’s children & Sonia on the right
As a mother of 3 children, Sonia proudly displayed her stunning tattoos by MoonWalking topless after deciding to live flat following breast cancer. She told us in 2023 that,
Being a single mother, I had to keep working to support my children. But I also had the mind-set that if I could continue working and go through treatment, then I would survive. Being away in Jordan for work part of the time, my little kids barely even registered that I had cancer, which was exactly what I wanted and they had a ball! I did come back and see them, but I didn’t want to be around them all the time during my treatment, as the effects of chemo are such a tough thing for children to see. After all my treatment, I was eventually given the all clear.
Sonia MoonWalked in 2023, topless, to raise awareness of the option of being flat and fabulous after breast cancer. She felt it was brilliant to see so many people come together to raise both money and awareness, and for thousands of us to be walking the streets of London through the night.
However you are marking the day, we hope these stories remind you that every step taken with Walk the Walk helps honour those we love, while supporting people affected by cancer, now and in the future. These are just some incredible stories from our amazing Walk the Walk family but we know there are so many more, and all of our MoonWalkers and Volunteers are a true inspiration to us here at HQ.
