With just two months to go, March is the moment when training becomes real. Lighter evenings mean opportunity for longer walks, more outdoor motivation, and rising excitement as The MoonWalk gets closer.

How to stay motivated

  • Bring headphones and listen to your favourite playlists, podcasts or audiobook
  • Take a scenic route with lots of visual stimulation
  • Remind yourself of the personal reason you’re walking! Are you training for The MoonWalk London? Do you have your own personal fitness goals?
  • Plan small rewards for reaching milestones, such as a special snack or a break at a scenic spot

Spring Kit

  • Layer smartly for unpredictable weather: Start with a moisture-wicking base layer (avoid cotton), add a light insulating mid-layer like fleece or merino, and pack a breathable waterproof jacket in case of classic UK spring showers.

  • Choose proper walking footwear: Wear well-fitted shoes that are light-weight for pavement walking and moisture-wicking socks (consider carrying a spare pair).

  • Prepare for rain and wind: Lightweight waterproof trousers can be invaluable, and a buff or light hat helps in chilly winds on exposed trails.

  • Protect from sun as well as cold: Even in spring, UV can be strong – bring sunglasses, sunscreen, and a cap for brighter days

  • Carry essential kit: A comfortable daypack with water (or hydration bladder), snacks, a small first aid kit, map/GPS and a power bank

Safety first!

Mornings are getting brighter and evenings are staying lighter – hooray! However, it’s still important to remember safety when walking in the evening or early morning.

  • Think visibility and safety: If you’re training early morning or evening, wear reflective details or a high-vis layer for road awareness. Reflective accessories such as scrunchies or shoelaces are a great addition!
  • Buddy up: Take a friend with you whilst out on walks if possible
  • Plan route: Let someone know your route before you leave and switch it up regularly
