The team at Walk the Walk are very proud of our Founder and Chief Executive Nina Barough. She has received several awards including a CBE in the 2006 New Year Honours list for Services to Healthcare.
Another highlight in Nina’s career was being presented with a Pride of Britain award for Fundraiser of the Year in 2008. Only 3 days after giving birth to her daughter Raphaelle, Nina appeared on the ITV show with an audience of millions.
What she didn’t know, was that a mini MoonWalk had been organised to deliver her award to the studio. Paul O’Grady accompanied by the stars of Loose Women, met up with a large group of MoonWalkers and Volunteers at The London Eye. They then walked along the South Bank carrying the award and would stop every so often to talk live with presenter Carol Vorderman before eventually arriving at the London Studios.
There was a surprise waiting when the crowd arrived, comedian and actor Russell Brand had asked if he could present Nina with the award, as his Mum had been diagnosed with breast cancer. What a treat for Nina that both Paul and Russell were there to recognise her achievements and give her a huge hug!
Everybody excitedly piled into the studio through the stage door, through the audience full of famous faces and so many got onto the stage that Carol Vorderman commented that she hoped it wouldn’t collapse!
Pride of Britain is a truly inspirational event recognising people who do extraordinary deeds and for Nina and Walk the Walk to be included was such a huge honour. The icing on the cake was for her to able to share the night with the Walk the Walk’s supporters.
Paul was so impressed with all he heard about The MoonWalk he actually signed up and walked the Half Moon the next year, wearing his bra of course!
TV Legend Paul O’Grady said;
“I fondly remember walking along South Bank with The MoonWalkers and the Loose Women delivering Nina’s award to her. I remember also that she had just had a baby girl a couple of days earlier and hadn’t even named her, brave woman! So I wish everybody taking part in the MoonWalk Celebration Road Trip the very best of luck and hope that many of you get to Iceland, no cheating now it’s not your local shop!”
