Sandy Smith told us:
“I live in the small isolated village of Week St Mary in North Cornwall. Together with my husband Martin, I fulfilled a long-held bucket list dream in May 2024 when we both took part in, and completed, the MoonWalk London.
We both loved it and found it to be a truly amazing, inspirational experience. At the time, we were very generously sponsored by our community, friends and family and raised an amazing total of £2,190. Following the walk, I was asked to talk about my MoonWalk experience to our village Women’s Institute and the rest is history!
With breast cancer being a cause close to all our hearts, particularly women, the talk was very well received and it was evident that many people would like to do a charity walk but didn’t feel able to tackle a marathon. And so the idea for a fun community walk, organised by myself in conjunction with the WI, for all of the community.
It took place in Week St Mary on Saturday 6th September, 2025, on a warm and sunny afternoon. On saying that, the gusty winds did threaten to play havoc with the bunting, balloons and gazebos and certainly made ‘Bra Pong’ slightly more challenging!
There was a really great turnout and the event was very well supported by the local community – men, women and children with ages ranging from 6 to 91 – mostly dressed in pink, together with a mix of four legged friends and mobility scooters!
In total 85 people walked, clocking up a total of 140 miles equating to an amazing 5.34 marathons in under 2 hours! All in all, it turned out to be a lovely, fun-filled afternoon with many people walking further than they ever thought possible and was followed by tea and delicious cake in the Parish Hall ☕️ 🍰.
We owe a very big ‘thank you’ to everyone who walked, everyone who donated without walking and to those who generously donated cakes and raffle prizes.
This event was also supported by the Week St Mary Bonaventures Women’s Institute, various village organisations, and a whole host of willing volunteers, marshalls and first aiders – definitely a community event, run by the community, for the community!

By the end of the day the original target of £1,000 had been surpassed, with the overall total reaching an incredible £1,908.95! All the funds raised were donated to Walk the Walk – a brilliant charity dedicated to raising money for research into breast cancer and supporting people on their cancer journeys💖.
On reflection the walk was great fun to organise, great to see people of all ages walking for a common cause and truly humbling to witness such generosity”
Thank you for all of your support Sandy, what an incredible fundraising event!
