Cancer charity, Walk the Walk is celebrating 30 years of making a difference, with the return of its flagship fundraising event, The MoonWalk London, taking place on Saturday night, 16 May. Entries are now open.
This year’s theme is a nostalgic nod to the Neon 90s, the decade the charity was founded, and walkers are encouraged to embrace the era with bold outfits, decorated bras and plenty of retro flair.
The iconic overnight walking challenge will see thousands of women, men and young people take on either 15.1 or 26.2 miles through the streets of London, raising funds and awareness for breast and other cancers. The event starts and finishes at Clapham Common with participants walking past the capital’s most iconic landmarks under the stars, many of which are illuminated in pink for the occasion.
Founder and CEO of Walk the Walk, Nina Barough CBE, who is also a UK National Walking Ambassador commented:
This is a landmark year for Walk the Walk; we’ve come a long way since the charity began 30 years ago, but our purpose still remains the same: to beat cancer one step at a time, through prevention, research and support for those living with the disease.
“The MoonWalk is a powerful reminder of what we can achieve when we each put one foot in front of the other. Walking is one of the most accessible ways to improve our physical and mental health, and it plays a vital role in both preventing and supporting recovery from cancer. Over the past 30 years, we’ve seen how walking brings people together, builds resilience, and creates real change. Whether you’re walking for a loved one, for your own health, for the challenge, for fun or to raise awareness, every step counts.

Meanwhile, Walk the Walk has released new findings from a recent survey of over 1,100 people, highlighting public attitudes towards breast cancer awareness and screening:
- 97% believe NHS breast screening should be offered to people outside the current age range of 50–70
- 85% do not feel confident checking their breasts or chest
- Only 1 in 4 check monthly, as recommended by the NHS
These findings come as breast cancer remains the most common cancer in the UK and the leading cause of death for women aged 35–49 in England and Wales (ONS, 2022). Over 29,000 cases are diagnosed each year outside the current screening age range of 50-70.
The survey also revealed that 36% of respondents feel they don’t exercise enough. Walk the Walk promotes walking as one of the most accessible and effective ways to improve physical and mental health, reduce the risk of preventable cancers, and support recovery.
As the UK’s National Walking Ambassador, Nina Barough has long championed walking as a simple but transformative activity and has recently written a second book on the subject, Walk Yourself Well, published by DK in 2025. Through events like The MoonWalk, the charity encourages people to take positive steps for their own wellbeing while supporting others affected by cancer.
