The streets of Edinburgh were a sea of sparkling light and colour on Saturday (7th September), as hundreds of people took on overnight walking challenges at The MoonWalk Scotland

Women, men and young people wearing brightly decorated bras or colourful “bra t-shirts” set off from Holyrood Park at 11pm, to walk a half or full marathon through the capital, to raise money for breast and other cancers.

Organised by breast cancer charity Walk the Walk, Scotland’s MoonWalk has raised an incredible £22 million since the event was first staged in 2006. Funds awarded by Walk the Walk make a huge difference to people across Scotland living with cancer – recent grants have been made to the Beatson Cancer Charity, Ayrshire Cancer Support and Make 2nds Count.

Kate Steele (49) from Liberton, Edinburgh was diagnosed with breast cancer in August 2023. She completed the Full Moon (26.2 miles) with a group of work colleagues from Edinburgh’s Royal Infirmary. She said:

“I feel utterly thrilled to bits to have finished the Full Moon. It was tough going for a while and for all my team for various reasons, but I had a tremendous night and the sense of achievement at the end was absolutely out of this world. I'm so proud of myself and my team and I will definitely come back again. Many thanks to everybody who supported us and everyone involved on the night, as well as to the volunteers out on the route - they were amazing.”

Glittering light installations showed MoonWalkers the way, with iconic buildings across the Edinburgh skyline also lit up pink in their honour, including: Camera Obscura, Lloyds on the Mound, the Royal Society of Edinburgh, the Royal Yacht Britannia, Edinburgh International Conference Centre, Radisson Blu Hotel and the Stamp Office. Dozens of walkers also took on a walking challenge virtually, in their own areas.

Nina Barough CBE, Founder and Chief Executive of Walk the Walk, said:-

“The energy and atmosphere at this year’s MoonWalk Scotland was absolutely fantastic – there was a lovely mixture of familiar faces, alongside lots of new walkers, including many young people, which was amazing to see. We were also very excited to include new light installations and entertainers on the route. Particularly along the sea front, these really did make the night sparkle for our incredible walkers.

We’re already planning for The MoonWalk Scotland 2025 and I’d encourage people of all ages to sign up – it’s such a unique event. The MoonWalk provides such a fulfilling experience – you enter, you take part, you get fitter yourself as you take on a personal challenge and at the same time you’re doing something wonderful for people living with cancer…it doesn’t get better than that.
