Get ready to party at the MoonWalk! 🎉

Our Moonwalk’s just got dramatic… Are you ready to sing along? This year our MoonWalk theme is the Wonderful World of MUSICALS!

Choose your favourite, from Rocky Horror to Cinderella, get out the fringing and feathers and cover your bra with colour and fun! We can’t wait to see what you all come up with!

Clothes and shoes

Make  sure you wear the right clothes. From the inside out, wear breathable layers, not too many. Possibly a base layer and light polar fleece as you will heat up as you walk. Make sure you have a waterproof and windproof jacket with a hood, and if necessary waterproof trousers.

If like me you suffer from cold hands gloves are essential, as our extremities can really feel the cold, even if the rest of you is warm. Try using a small reusable heat pad in each glove.

Carry a water bottle with you at all times. If cold water in the winter isn’t for you, I recommend adding mint or fresh ginger and hot water to make a really comforting drink. Remember to sip little and often rather than gulp it all down.

A buff or scarf over your mouth can help especially when the temperature drops. Given that we lose 7 – 10% of our heat through our head, I also recommend wearing a pull on beanie that you can then pull your jacket hood over the top of, if you need to. Finally, don’t forget lip salve it’s a must when it’s cold.

But, we’re all different, getting the right combination for you is vital. Overheating and then having cold sweat next to your body becomes really uncomfortable and very unpleasant in winter. If you’re not sure, take a light day pack that you can carry either an extra layer, or discard clothing if you need to.

When it comes to your feet, no matter what terrain you are walking it is best to have Gore-tex of waterproof trainers, trail shoes or walking boots, to avoid having wet feet.

If you have the right clothing to hand, winter walking can be exhilarating whatever the weather and look at the benefits!

Boosting your immune system

Because being active boosts your immune system and makes it work harder, in turn it decreases your chances of catching colds and other winter viruses.

Release stress and improve your mood

If you are someone who suffers the winter blues or SAD as it is known, then a brisk walk could be just the answer to get your endorphins or ‘happy hormones’ working. When the wind is blowing or the temperature drops, it can be very tempting to stay cosy inside. But, walking outside even for 15 minutes can help blow away the cobwebs as the old saying goes, and have a profound impact on your mood and wellbeing.

Burn calories

Because your body’s metabolism will have to work harder to keep warm, you will burn more calories. At the same time, by increasing your heart rate and turning your walk into an aerobic workout you’re supporting your heart health… Just keep an eye on the warming hot chocolate at the end of your walk!

Have you got the right shoes?
