  1. Hotel and Travel Information

Information below is based on the 2019 challenge, to be used as a guide only and subject to change.

The Team will be staying at the 4 star Hotel De Bilderberg situated in Oosterbeek, which is approx. 30 - 40 minutes from the start of the Marches. The hotel lies within a picturesque village, surrounded by mighty oak trees. The hotel has a large terrace, 2 restaurants, swimming pool, sauna, steam room, fitness centre, tennis courts and bicycles to hire. It is the perfect place to recoup your energy, take a swim, stretch out tired muscles and prepare yourself for the next day!

    Getting there...

We suggest that you book a flight to Amsterdam where you will be able to take a train to Arnhem and then taxi or bus to the hotel at Oosterbeek.

    Eating & Drinking

Breakfast is included in the challenge cost, the Hotel serves hot and cold food, cereals, meats, eggs and rolls! Although you may not feel like eating a big breakfast at the early hour that we will be getting up, it is really important to eat to ensure your energy levels are kept up!

Out on the march each day, there are stalls along the route, with farmers selling juicy watermelons and delicious nibbles to keep you going. There are children and locals handing out cucumber, cheese, biscuits, crisps, and liquorice sweets, which are a local delicacy, you won't go hungry! You can also get some chips once you have finished back at De Wedren. Dinner is available at your hotel in two lovely restaurants, or it is easy to get a taxi (or walk if you are up for it) into the village for a change.

    Massage

We organise a team of professional masseuses at the Hotel each evening after the Marches (additional cost). We highly recommend you take up these massages; they are extremely valuable... you may hobble into seeing them; however, you will come out dancing! They really do work wonders!

  2. Itinerary

Information below is based on the 2019 challenge, to be used as a guide only and subject to change.

Your Nijmegen Marches adventure starts here!

    Day 1 - Monday 15 July 2019

Make your way to the Netherlands and our Hotel in Oosterbeek; Hotel De Bilderberg - please arrive no later than midday.

Once checked in and settled, the Team will meet and have a short Tactics Talk. Your Walk the Walk Support Team will go through everything you can expect over the next 4 days. We will then travel by coach to register for the Nijmegen Marches.

After registration, we will have a great opportunity to look around and enjoy Nijmegen before all the action starts the next day. There are many lovely cafés with live bands playing, and you can enjoy dinner and a drink before heading back to your hotel to prepare for tomorrow! Or if you wish, you could dine at our Hotel which has 2 restaurants a choice of Italian or French-American themed.

    Days 2, 3 and 4...

We are taking on the 40K challenge each day and will depart the Hotel by coach at 03.30 am. Please note:

    • Our start time is between 04.30 - 05.15 - the earlier the better, we aim to get the majority of the distance complete before it gets hot!
    • Our finishing time will be between 12 midday and 14.30 based on an approx. 8 hour team target time.
    • We have a coach departing Nijmegen to return to the Hotel each day.

    Make sure you have breakfast...

It is really important that you have something to eat and drink before you leave. If you just can’t face it, pack a roll and some cheese etc. to eat on the bus. We know that you have worked really hard towards the fitness you require, so please do not underestimate the importance of the food you eat, and the water you drink, as they both play a vital part in your ability to succeed!

Day 5… Friday 19 July - The Final Day of the Nijmegen Marches

Well, this is it, your final day, the Nijmegen Cross is nearly yours!

The arrangements for the day will be the same as for the previous days with just a few differences...

Gladioli Day – today you will see lots of the people taking part in the event with armfuls of Gladioli. Spectators give them to people as they pass... thousands of people come out onto the street to cheer you on, bringing with them their settee, hospital bed and anything in between to sit on, it is quite an amazing spectacle.

As a Civilian Marching Team, we all then head to collect our Royally acclaimed Nijmegen Cross Medal, before heading to the Finish Line.

Enjoy every minute of these wonderful 4 days, it is glorious and has moments to be cherished! You have accomplished the Challenge of all Challenges!

Our coach will be picking us up slightly later today so we can all enjoy the finish area, music and atmosphere, and have a celebratory drink... YOU DID IT!!
