Tenovus Cancer Care unveil new Mobile Cancer Support Unit

We had a tour around the three mobile units, two of which Walk the Walk have helped fund.

Wow, what an incredible day we have had at the official opening in Cardiff Bay of the Tenovus Cancer Care new Mobile Cancer Support Unit! Walk the Walk were delighted to have been able to grant half a million pounds as Principal Funder for the build of the largest chemotherapy unit in the world. A huge THANK YOU to all our amazing Walkers and Supporters for helping to make this happen

Sally and I were lucky and honoured to meet HRH The Princess Royal, the Patron of Tenovus, who showed great interest in this incredible mobile unit. Sally created quite a stir flying the Walk the Walk flag by wearing a Welsh Dragon Bra donated by a Walker. You will never guess who signed it… the one and only, Rugby Union International, Sam Warburton!!!

In the afternoon we were joined by some of our wonderful Walk the Walkers, it was a fantastic opportunity to share where the money goes with something so tangible.
We had a tour around the three mobile units, two of which Walk the Walk have helped fund.

In 2013, Walk the Walk was joint lead funder with the Welsh Government of the second Tenovus Mobile Cancer Support Unit. Over the last year, the Mobile Cancer Support Unit has provided more than 2,700 lymphoedema treatment sessions – that’s almost one treatment for half the lymphoedema patients in Wales.

The third unit will deliver chemotherapy treatment to cancer patients living in rural parts of Wales. This unit is huge… almost 14 metres long and weighing 30 tons. With up to seven chemotherapy chairs, the unit will enable more than 600 people to receive their chemotherapy treatment in the unit every year… this amounts to around 3,000 treatments!

The WTW Team, along with a few special guests, were also lucky to see the impressive unit with a sneaky peek last week at WTW HQ before the official unveiling.

Claudia McVie, Chief Executive and Rhian Edwards, Director of Research and Support from Tenovus, gave an informative and emotional introduction to the work done by Tenovus. Guests were then given an exclusive tour inside the remarkable new unit.

“Rhian and Claudia were a joy to listen to.The Tenovus mobile unit is very impressive. The concept is as simple as it is ingenious and the delivery of such a service is fantastic.Well done Walk the Walk it made me feel very proud to have helped in some small way.” – Maggie, Volunteer

A special Thank you to our Walk the Walkers who were able to join us and to Lisa and Tim from Tenovus who were great hosts and made us feel so welcome.

So go on… keep Walking the Walk with us and continue to make a difference! Thank you for uniting with us against breast cancer and for making this all possible!

How can you help Walk the Walk…?

Sign up to a challenge – there’s something for everyone!

Volunteer – either in the office or at an event!

Jo and Sally xx
